September's Safety Topic - National Preparedness Month

Did you know?

National Preparedness Month, also known as September Safety Month or Disaster Preparedness Month, is an annual campaign held in September by the American Red Cross. It is dedicated to empowering individuals, families, businesses, and communities with the knowledge and resources they need to respond to and recover from emergencies.

As part of the County’s ongoing commitment to workplace safety and emergency preparedness, the Courthouse Safety Committee wants to ensure all staff are familiar with the location and basic use of the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on site.

While we hope you never find it necessary to use them, knowledge and quick action could help save a life.

📍 AED Locations:

There are Several AED machines located within the Courthouse and can be found in the following locations:

  • Basement / Ground Floor - Maintenance Hallway
  • 1st floor - Mailroom
  • 1st floor - State Courts Hallway
  • 2nd floor - next to Elevator

There are also AED machines located at the Juvenile and Owen Buildings in the Kitchen Area.

These devices are clearly marked with AED signage and are accessible during any emergency.

🩺 When to Use an AED:

An AED should be used on someone who is:

  • Unresponsive and
  • Not breathing normally (or not breathing at all)

Time is critical during a cardiac emergency. AEDs are designed to be used by laypersons – you do not need medical training to operate one.

🛠️ How to Use an AED:

  1. Call for help – Alert others and call emergency services (e.g., 911).
  2. Turn on the AED – The machine will guide you with clear, audible instructions.
  3. Attach the pads – As shown in the diagrams on the pads themselves.
  4. Follow voice prompts – The AED will assess the person and advise if a shock is needed.
  5. Continue CPR if advised – Keep following instructions until emergency responders arrive.
