Role of the Coos County Planning Commission
The Coos County Planning Commission is a citizen advisory body appointed by the Board of Commissioners. The Commission helps guide land use planning and development decisions in accordance with the Coos County Comprehensive Plan, the Coos County Zoning and Land Development Ordinance (CCZLDO), and Oregon’s Statewide Planning Goals.
The Planning Commission conducts public hearings and:
- Makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on proposed legislative changes, including amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinances.
- Reviews and decides certain land use applications, such as hearings body conditional uses and appeals of a lower decision.
Commission meetings are open to the public and provide an opportunity for community members to participate in land use decisions. The Commission applies adopted policies and regulations fairly and consistently to ensure transparent and legally sound decisions.
Relationship to the Board of Commissioners
The Planning Commission acts in an advisory capacity on legislative matters and as a decision-making body on certain land use applications. Final authority for legislative changes rests with the Coos County Board of Commissioners. Certain decisions may be appealed to the Board of Commissioners, as provided by law.
